Pregnancy the Second Time Around

Being pregnant the second time around seems totally different. The most noticeable to me is the tiredness. I know I was tired when I was pregnant with Mikey and fell asleep at 7:30 pm on some nights. But as I was telling my husband, with the second when you get tired, you can't just go to bed. You still need to do dinner, or give a bath, or play, or read stories... I am loving every minute though!

I am 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant and I have noticed alot of what I can only describe as "uterus stretching". I feel like I am pulling a muscle whenever I turn in bed, or get out of my chair. I think that is crazy considering that I am just under 6 weeks along! I am not even showing yet, LOL! Not that I will be able to tell for a while anyhow... but that is a whole other issue.

As far as my weight goes, I started this pregnancy 18.8 pounds heavier than I started with my son. Since my BFP, I had lost 2.8 pounds but managed to gain back only 1 pound.  I am surprised considering how bloated I have been, but I am sure I will start to gain soon and then look back on these early days and laugh at myself.  I want to definitely eat better this time around because the last time I ate for 2! I gained 40 pounds and only went 7 months! Imagine how big I would have gotten had I gone to term?!?! I shudder to think! Not to mention I am already about 40 pounds overweight to begin with *sigh*. Oh well, it is my own fault, all is well :-)

Secondary Infertility can kiss my ass!

I have not blogged about my TTC adventures in quite some time... but a lot has happened since last I wrote. Here is a quick history... My husband and I decided to start trying for a baby in August 2005. I decided that if we were doing this, I was going all out. I took my BBT, did the OPK's... the works. The second cycle trying we were lucky enough to get pregnant and 7 months later, my son was early, Mikey was born at 31 weeks 5 days.

Come August 2006 I really wanted to get pregnant again. I have always wanted my children to be close in age. We were not trying, but we were definitely not preventing. So, I started with my OPK's again and made sure we baby danced at all the right times. Each month I got a little more saddened when the witch made her appearance.

By June 2007 we actually talked about actively trying for baby #2. I told my husband that unbeknownst to him we had been trying and I was really surprised we hadn't gotten pregnant by this point. In December of that year I went to my yearly Pap test and discussed it with my OB/GYN. He thought perhaps it was because I had just stopped breast feeding 2 months prior. I thought it was more than that. I knew I was ovulating, it just wasn't happening! So now it is February 2008 and I went to get some preliminary blood work done. Had the blood drawn at two different times in the month and came to find out everything checked out perfect. Then came the nearly $1,000 medical bill because I found out the hard way that my insurance does not cover anything related to Infertility. So, this sucked because I felt there would be no way we would ever have another child.

Mid-2008 my husband had an Sperm Analysis done and everything checked out. Ph was a little high, but nothing that was to alarm us. Now it is August 2008 and my husband got a great new job that we knew would change his life careerwise... but then best of all it had incredible health insurance that covered INFERTILITY TREATMENTS!

So once we found that out we decided to meet with a Reproductive Endocrinologist. That appointment was October 30, 2008. Based on all of the information provided, he put us in the dreaded "Secondary Infertility" category. Basically there was no explanation of why we were not getting pregnant. To me, I wanted a reason this was not happening... I wanted something the RE could fix! He said it is not always better to have a reason for this, because then there is something that you indeed, need to fix. I did understand his logic... but a small part of me still wanted answers!

I was scheduled for another round of blood work and then I was to have an HSG performed. Again the blood work came back normal, then on to the HSG. In an HSG they perform an X-ray while injecting dye into your tubes to make sure they are open and not blocked. They started the procedure and I heard them talking about unicorunate and what not. Then they wanted me to lay on my left side to see if the dye could make it into my left tube. Which it eventually did. The obstacle... it was determined that I had a bicorunate uterus or what is commonly called a heart shaped uterus. It was also referred to as a septated uterus.

My RE said normally he would not recommend his patients do anything when it is discovered that they have one. But then he said the problems they can cause are miscarriages and premature labor. Ding, ding, ding! That is me! So we decided to investigate it further with an MRI and I had a surgery in December to correct it. After surgery, we had to wait 2 cycles to try again.

In our first meeting with the RE we discussed the plan of action. He decided we would do 3 IUI's with progesterone supposititories (for a shorter than my normal Luteal Phase) and then jump right to IVF. This was exciting but nerve wracking at the same time. We did have health insurance that covered infertility treatments, but we also had a $10,000 cap on procedures. We knew that the insurance should cover about 6 IUI's and 1 IVF Cycle... and after that, we would be done, forever.

We started in February 2009 with our first IUI. It was an unmedicated cycle and I was just to call when I got a positive OPK, then they would do the insemination the next day. That cycle was a bust.

Onto IUI#2 - March 2009... This cycle I was to do 100 mg Clomid. I was excited because I really wanted us to get more aggressive with treatment. I "passed" the Clomid Challenge Test and reacted well to the medicine. Had the IUI done on March 26 and then I started my progesterone the next day and my dreaded 2 week wait had begun!

Being who I am I obsess over all symptoms, but at the same time I try not to read into them too much as I have similar symptoms every month. I am also addicted to testing early so just for the heck of it I decided to pee on a stick (POAS) the night of 8 DPO.

Now let me tell you, I have peed on far too many HPT's in my lifetime and I know what a negative test looks like. This test I took that night had the slightest "oh my god I think I am hallucinating" line on it. I stared at this thing, I squinted, I held it to the light, turned my head sideways.... the works. I still thought I saw something! I finally put it down and went about my night.

Right before bedtime I looked at it again, which I know you are not supposed to do, but who are we kidding girls? Who does not look at their tests again, even if they are in the garbage can. Anyhow, I still imagined this beautiful line.

I could not sleep that night and woke up around 7 am to take a FRER. Within 2 minutes I saw something, I really saw something! I immediately began crying my eyes out! It has been over 2.5 years and I think I am holding a positive pregnancy test at 9 DPO!

This is the beauty at 9 DPO....

Update from that afternoon, with one my the tests I sell ....

And here is 9 DPO on top, with 10 DPO on the bottom!!!

And on 11 DPO I decided to bust out the big guns... that's right, the digital pregnancy test!

So needless to say, that second IUI with Clomid did the trick and I am due December 17, 2009! I have also had 2 blood tests to confirm my pregnancy. One drawn at 14 DPO with a result of 215 hcg and the last one drawn at 21 DPO (today) that measured 2,589 hcg. I am doubling perfectly and have my first ultrasound scheduled for April 28.

We are BEYOND THRILLED!!!!

Crickets Chirping...

I am dusting off the ol' blogging keyboard here. I haven't had a whole lot to say as of late. We are on to yet another cycle of TTC. This is cycle #17! Yikes! That is a big number it seems... I had some basic bloodwork drawn and all is normal. I will meet with the doctor next week and hopefully discuss a game plan. I assume they will want to get some tests done on DH and then we will go from there.

On a side note, it is exactly 28 days until Mikey's 2nd birthday! Time sure has flown by!!!

Are You Pregnant?

Like I needed this quiz to tell me, but I had to take it just in case ya know! LOL

You Are Probably Not Pregnant
It seems like you're in the clear, but you should really take a test to be sure.

Early Pregnancy Symptoms?

Are you pregnant? Check out the 18 pregnancy symptoms below to see if you have been experiencing any of them.

1. Nausea or morning sickness: Morning sickness is term to describe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. This occurs in approximately 50% to 95% of all pregnant women as early as the first week of pregnancy. Morning sickness probably got it's name due to the fact that most of the nauseating symptoms start in the morning right after you get out of bed when your blood sugar levels are low. However, it may happen at any time of the day.

2. Headaches: If you have never experienced regular headaches before pregnancy, be prepared for some throbbing pain in your head and neck during pregnancy. Changes in your body's hormonal patterns is the primary cause of headaches during pregnancy. Other conditions like lack of sleep, poor posture, stress, dehydration and low blood sugar levels may also worsen of cause headaches.

3. Dizziness and fainting spells: Due to the lowered blood pressure in your body during pregnancy, blood flow to the brain may cause dizziness and fainting spells in serious cases.

4. Mood swings: With your hormones raging, it is common for women to feel moody during their pregnancy. All women have to go through a period of adjustment to settle into their new roles as a pregnant women and that takes time.

5. Fatigue: If you feel tired and experience some or all of the symptoms mentioned in this article, you have a good chance of being pregnant. Hormonal changes are usually the main cause of fatigue followed by the additional weight you have to carry around.

6. Food cravings: Craving for food that you normally would not eat could be a sign that you are pregnant. Normally, women report cravings for salty and sweet food during pregnancy while others report a uncommon desire for spicy or starchy food.

7. Weight gain and bloating: The combination of your baby's growth and your increased food intake will cause you to put on weight and your clothes to fit tighter than usual. An inexplicable increase in size of your stomach is also a definitive sign that you may be pregnant.

8. Heartburn: Hormones created during pregnancy may relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which opens the valve to allow stomach acids to flow up into the esophagus causing a burning sensation.

9. Lower back pain: As your baby grows in size, the additional weight pulls your spine to the front of your body and causes you to experience some back pain from time to time.

10. Constipation: Hormonal changes during pregnancy slows down the movement of food through your digestive system which results in constipation. This could be a sign of pregnancy if you do not experience constipation frequently.

11. Constant urination: Your growing baby in the uterus puts a lot of pressure on your bladder and you may find yourself visiting the toilet more frequently than usual.

12. High Basal Body Temperature (BBT): If your BTT stays in the high temperature range for 18 days or more, you have a good chance of being pregnant.

13. Cramping: As the uterus grows and stretches, it is normal to feel cramps that feel similar to menstrual cramps.

14. Spotting: Slight bleeding occurs when the fertilized egg begins to implant itself into the uterus any time from 3 to 6 days after fertilization. This usually happens outside of a normal menstruation cycle so it should not be confused with a normal period.

15. Darkening of the areolas: Your areolas could darken and increase in diameter during pregnancy. This is caused by your body's preparation for your breasts to produce milk.

16. Tender or swollen breasts: A lot of women experience sore, swollen, tingly or tender breasts during pregnancy due to the increasing hormones that are used to prepare a woman for breastfeeding. This feels like a amplified version of how your breast feels before your period.

17. Missed periods: If you have been sexually active and you missed a period, it is a good indication that are you are pregnant. A pregnancy test should be taken to confirm if the missed period is really caused by your pregnancy.

18. Positive pregnancy tests: Only a positive urine test or blood test can give you solid indication that you are pregnant. The problem is, they may not be fool proof. Remember to visit a doctor to conduct further tests to confirm the results.

It is important to remember that not all of the symptoms above can confirm a pregnancy. When you have a positive pregnancy test, visit a doctor to get more tests done to confirm your pregnancy. That's the only way to find out if you are truly pregnant.

The dreaded day

CD 1 that is. Not that I was expecting any different this month, but still. TTC can really take it's toll on you after awhile. *sigh* Oh well, another month and another chance to try again. I will call my OB/GYN back today if he doesn't call me first. Hopefully I can get in to get some bloodwork done and see what my problem is. 15 cycles TTC and no pregnancy is kind of nuts considering Mikey was conceived in the 2nd cycle we tried.

January 29, 2008

Yawn!

CD 7 is boring! Well, pretty much CD 1-10 is pretty boring for me... I don't always keep track of my temp at this time because it seems pretty useless at this point. I did stick the thermometer in my mouth a few times, but that was more to rule out a fever. I have not been feeling too great the past couple of days and I need to make sure that I do not get sick. I have to especially make sure that Mikey does not get sick at this time too.

January 28, 2008

I am 2 days late now...

That is my first thought this morning. But it did not last long, because she did show up.

But I am okay with it. Really. People keep telling me "I am sorry that AF showed"... but I am fine and I have accepted it.

I am just so darn happy to be kind of normal again. So to speak ;)

January 23, 2008

Wow, I made it 13 DPO

I am amazed that I am even writing this... I. am. at. 13. DPO! Wow! That is pretty exciting for a girl who has had an 11 day LP for the past few months. Of course I would rather being announcing a nice old BFP, but hey, I will take this for now!

I did not bother testing today because my temp took a virtual nosedive.

Here is my chart:

My Chart

January 22, 2008

12 DPO

Well I am pretty confident that I am not pregnant. I have taken a few HPT's and they are all coming back as big fat negative, BFN!  Oh well... on the bright side, still no AF today so far AND my LP is 1 day longer now! I am excited about that because it means my cycles are getting back to normal. Finally!

Why are my cycles not normal you may ask? For a couple of reason perhaps...

1. Had a baby. This can change what I consider a "normal" cycle. What my normal used to be was a 28-29 day cycle and ovulating on CD 15. I also had a 14 day luteal phase.

2. Breastfeeding. Although I got my first PPAF (post partum aunt flow, aka Period) at exactly 3 months PP, my cycles had not reverted to their normal length. I was ovulating as early as August from what I remember. (took an OPK) I breastfed my son for almost 18 months and it has been almost 4 months since we stopped, so it is nice to see things head in the right direction cycle-wise. I told my OB/GYN at my annual appointment and he advised to call for bloodwork in March or April if not yet pregnant. I am hoping to get pregnant before then!

January 21, 2008

Ding, dong the witch...

... has not yet arrived! She is due today and she has yet to make her presence known. Normally I would have started by this time of the day.

Did you test today? You bet! It was negative although I did get an evap line. I never get those, so needless to say it was kind of nice to see a second line there even though I know it means absolutely nothing at all!

Temps went up ever so slightly, which is very normal for the day of AF. So where is she? I am hoping now that my LP might actually go back to its normal length. That would give me hope that pregnancy won't be so far off afterall.

January 20, 2008

Now what am I waiting for?

Made it to 11 DPO... didn't bother testing today because I started spotting yesterday. It has stopped but I still feel like the witch is coming. My temp also went down a bit today but not too much. If AF shows today then my LP has shortened by yet another day. What is going on here? I used to have a 14 day LP before I got pregnant with Mikey. Now it seems to get a little bit shorter every few months.

January 19, 2008

10 DPO and losing faith

I was so convinced that I was going to see a positive HPT today... did I? No! The reason I have been feeling so optomistic is my chart overlay with the current cycle and also the cycle that I got pregnant with Mikey. I did move my ovulation day for this cycle, but the similarities are uncanny!

This is my overlay as of yesterday at 9 DPO. You would think I was making this up, but alas, I am not. WOW! At least there is always tomorrow to test!

January 18, 2008

One day closer

That is right, one day closer to knowing whether or not I am indeed pregnant. It seems like an eternity to wait when you are trying to get pregnant.

Anyhow, I am 9 DPO and tested again and still getting stark white tests. Boo! Negative tests are no fun. Probably why a lot of women don't bother testing until their periods are late. I just don't see any fun in that Wink

January 17, 2008

Time to test

BEEP BEEP...Alarm goes off... I roll over and take my temp. That is usually how I start my morning.  Then I realize that I am 8 DPO today and I get to pee on a stick (well today I will be peeing in a cup) Getting up on the day you are going to take a pregnancy test is easy... no matter how tired and groggy you are, there is something to look forward to.

Why do I start at 8 DPO? I started at 8 DPO when I was pregnant with Mikey, I "thought" I saw something that day and disregarded it. Anyhow, with an 11 day luteal phase, I figure it is a decent time to start.

I pee, I dip, I wait... negative. That's okay, it is still early, lol!

January 16, 2008

The Wait

You know... those 14 days (or 11 in my case) before you can pee on a stick.  I am currently 7DPO and I am getting anxious! HA, not that I am going to wait that long to give into my POAS addiction anyhow , but still! Tick, tock...
